the burden

This mixed media piece by Ugandan artist, Ronex Ahimbisibwe caught my eye at a museum we visited this week. I feel it’s a pretty profound commentary of how young Ugandans feel as they try to work their way “up” and out of a system that feels so heavy and limiting. Interesting (and saddening) to think about how much our country of origin dictates our access to certain opportunities and to certain “rights”.

Though it’s true that there are many in the US who don’t have opportunity and who are faced with terribly difficult circumstances, our narrative as a country, and the issues we hand down to upcoming generations are very different. Maybe not better, just different. #foodforthoughttonight
